Royal Borough of Kingston – Jubilee Square
A mixed-discipline student team worked in collaboration with the High Street Recovery and Regeneration Teams at the Royal Borough of Kingston Council over several months on a placemaking brief to transform the land behind New Malden Car Park and activate it as a welcoming town square
Overview
The brief was to create a colourful backdrop for activities whilst representing the community and featuring some of the stories behind the area, covering the boring green hoardings with inspiring artworks.
Esdras de Costa, a BA Design Marketing graduate worked on the naming and history panels, carefully designing a colour palette and identity for the square, weaving in some historical photographs and background information.
“I got thrilled by the opportunity to collaborate on such a valuable project as Jubilee Square, which has given me the chance to connect to the local community and their history through my designs. On those I celebrate how vibrant, lively and diverse New Malden is, contributing to this exciting public space”
Molly O’Neill created a stunning blue and yellow design to highlight the Bee Story, giving people a place to reflect and contemplate their environment, nature and the stunning planting. Molly says: “It was really exciting getting the opportunity to work with the space at Jubilee Square, being able to bring some colour to its walls. It was also a great chance to get involved with working alongside the community in New Malden.”
Georgie Sweet, a BA Illustration Animation Graduate worked on the Welcome Board and the New Malden Camera Club pieces - “ This was a fantastic project and I feel so lucky that I was able to be a part of it! To be able to make work that feels so connected to the local New Malden community is a real honour. A huge thank you to all involved!”
The hoardings will be in situ for at least the next five years.
